Since the past year or so, I've started spending more time writing and reading. In the US, there are public libraries providing free access to books and other media. I primarily rely on libraries for non-technical books. Recently I dropped into the "friends of a library” section of my local library. These sections sell discarded library books or donated books by the patrons to raise funds. Books are sold for low prices; like a dollar for a hardbound book. The book selection obviously depends on your luck. However quality wise the books are usually in good condition with some minor cosmetic defects.
With a "cheap" book I did something that would otherwise violate my middle class prejudice. I took notes on the book itself! I do consider dog ears a crime so writing in books is almost as blasphemous.
Turns out taking notes in the book's margin helps with topic recall. Bill Gates is apparently a voracious reader of books who seems to follow a similar methodology clocking about 3 hours per day.
Somehow I’ve been reading more physical books rather than ebooks. Owning books might not need billionaire financial levels. However keeping a huge stash of books in a bay area home is definitely still going to be an issue.
What are your reading habits?
